Discovering Knowledge
Curiosity about the world can lead to the learning of knowledge. In The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas lives in the not so perfect society known as the Community. The leaders of the Community make all of the choices for the citizens, like who they marry and what job they will perform. Jonas is selected to be the Receiver of Memory, which is responsible for holding all of the memories of the world. The Giver gives the memories to Jonas and he teaches him about love, family, colors, and emotions. The main character then realizes all of the things the Community took away from the citizens, so he leaves to give the memories back to the people. Jonas starts the story as being curious. Through the many experiences he encounters, Jonas develops into a selfless and determined character.
Throughout the story, Jonas is a curious person who is always looking to learn new things. In the book, Jonas is tossing an apple with Asher when he notices the apple change. He then brings it home against the rules to inspect it. “He held a magnifying glass to it. He had tossed it several times across the room, watching, and then rolled it around and around on his desktop, waiting for the thing to happen” (25). Jonas has always been a curious person, even when the rest of the citizens in the Community aren’t. He desires knowledge and will do anything to be able to obtain it, even if that means he has to break the rules. As the new Receiver, Jonas is allowed to ask the Giver many questions which greatens his understanding of the world. “Jonas interrupted him with a question. “Can you tell me her name? My parents said that it wasn’t to be spoken again in the community. But couldn’t you say it just to me?” (132). Jonas is always asking the Giver many questions to gain more knowledge. He wants to know more about the world outside of the Community and how things like color and weather
were in the Community before “Sameness.” Jonas always goes out of his way to be able to learn something new because of his desire to have a better understanding of Elsewhere.
From Jonas's curiosity, he develops into a selfless character willing to risk his life for the people and things he loves. Jonas displays selflessness when he finds the truth about "release" and he and the Giver come up with a plan to save the Community. "It was possible, what they had planned. Barely possible. If it failed, he would likely be killed. But what did that matter? If he stayed, his life was no longer worth living" (146). Jonas cares too much for the community to see the people not be able to truly understand feelings like pain and love. Jonas has knowledge and wants the citizens to be able to have it as well. As Jonas and Gabe get closer to Elsewhere, they start to face problems and Jonas represents being selfless. "He wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared about himself" (163). Jonas knows what love is from memories of places outside of the Community. He loves Gabriel so much he would risk his life for him if that meant he would be able to
survive. Jonas always puts people before himself. Jonas is the definition of selfless through all of his care and love he gives to people and things.
Jonas becomes a determined person to be able to accomplish his goals. He displays determination while riding his bike to Elsewhere. “His sprained ankle throbbed as he forced the pedal downward an effect that was almost beyond him” (163). Jonas is determined to push through the pain he is encountering to be able to reach his destination. He uses his pain he is feeling to motivate himself to keep going. He wants to be about to accomplish his goal so badly, that he doesn't give up on himself even in the hardest of times. Jonas also demonstrates determination while figuring out he is almost near Elsewhere. “He began to walk faster on feet that he could no longer feel. But the hill was treacherously steep: he was impeded by the snow and his own lack of strength” (166). From the knowledge Jonas has gained, he now discovers the feeling and meaning of love. Jonas’s love for Gabriel pushes him farther and farther to be able to keep going. Also, he knows that he is almost completing his goal which motivates him as well to continue on through all of the internal and external pain he is facing. Jonas’s determination and never giving up allows him to be able to make it to Elsewhere.

Summer
Summer is fun
Children can play in the sun
The weather is warm
And there are no more storms
Going to the beach
Sunsets the color peach
Vacationing to places
Seeing different faces
Swimming in pools
Not going to school
No more stress
Get to rest
Hanging with friends
Hoping summer never ends
Going back to school is a bummer
